NH: a hose coupling standard for fire and industrial work
NH stands for National Hose, a standardized connection system used almost exclusively in fire service and industrial firefighting applications across North America. The term refers both to the coupling design itself and to the thread pitch and connection method. An NH coupling is a male or female threaded connection, typically made from brass or aluminum alloy, that joins hose sections, nozzles, and adapters with a quarter-turn or hand-tight fit. The standard thread is National Hose (NH) with a 7/8 inch diameter and specific pitch, which differs markedly from garden hose or other industrial quick-couplers.
The NH coupling comes in two gender types: female (swivel socket) and male (swivel shank). Fire hoses and equipment are color-coded and size-designated, with 1.5 inch and 2.5 inch hose diameters being the most common in fire departments. The couplings are designed to withstand water pressures typically between 300 and 400 psi during normal operation, though modern hose can handle higher static pressures. Adapter bushings allow NH couplings to connect to different hose diameters or to transition to other standards like the Storz coupling used in some European fire services.
Why NH matters in the field
Interchangeability is the main reason NH became the dominant standard in North America. Any properly maintained NH-threaded hose, nozzle, or appliance will mate reliably with any other NH equipment, which is critical when multiple fire departments must work together at large incidents. The threaded design also tolerates the wear and dirt that accumulate during frequent deployment and high-volume water discharge. Unlike snap couplings, NH connections do not lock automatically, so they require intentional hand-tightening; this has both advantages (no accidental disconnection under surge pressure) and drawbacks (slower coupling and uncoupling during time-sensitive operations).
Failure modes in NH systems are usually corrosion, thread damage from over-tightening, or wear on the swivel components. Brass couplings can corrode if stored wet or exposed to salt spray, while aluminum alloy couplings are lighter but less resistant to physical damage. Thread stripping occurs when operators force a coupling onto a mismatched or damaged male fitting, rendering both pieces unserviceable. Regular inspection and cleaning of threads and sealing surfaces prevents most field problems.
The NH standard exists alongside a few other regional or older couplings in North America, but it has consolidated nearly all fire service use since the mid-twentieth century. Understanding NH compatibility is essential for anyone working with fire apparatus, portable pumps, ladder pipes, or standpipe systems, since an incompatible coupling in a chain of hose is a critical failure point when water delivery is needed.
