NGST stands for New Generation Space Telescope, the formal designation NASA used during development of what is now known as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The term is largely historical; aviation and spacecraft maintenance personnel may still encounter it in older technical documentation, design archives, and legacy maintenance protocols dating from the 1990s and early 2000s.
The project began as a concept study in 1984 and received the NGST designation in 1996 when NASA formally adopted it as the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. The name reflected its purpose: a fundamentally new approach to infrared astronomy using segmented mirror technology and active thermal management rather than the fixed optical designs of earlier spacecraft. In 2002, following a major redesign to reduce cost and complexity, the project was formally renamed the James Webb Space Telescope in honor of the former NASA administrator.
In maintenance and engineering contexts, NGST documents typically address the original architecture: the 6.5-meter primary mirror composed of beryllium segments coated with gold, the complex sunshield system, and the cryogenic infrared instruments. Technicians working with heritage designs or reverse-engineering legacy systems may need to cross-reference NGST-era schematics against the final JWST configuration, as significant structural and thermal modifications occurred between the NGST conceptual phase and launch in December 2021.
The shift from NGST to JWST nomenclature matters in practice. Parts catalogs, work instruction sets, and failure analysis databases may be indexed under either designation. Maintenance personnel on long-term support contracts should confirm which documentation baseline their employer maintains, especially for subsystems like the cryogenic cooler or the deployable sunshield that underwent substantial redesigns after the NGST era.
