Organic farming produces crops and livestock without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or growth promoters. Instead, farmers rely on crop rotation, composted manure, cover crops, and biological pest control to maintain soil fertility and manage pests. The result is food certified as organic under regulations that vary by jurisdiction, most notably the USDA National Organic Program in the United States and equivalent schemes in the EU, Japan, and other markets.
The equipment and inputs differ fundamentally from conventional agriculture. Instead of anhydrous ammonia or ammonium nitrate, organic farms apply nitrogen through legume crops (alfalfa, clover) and animal manures. Instead of herbicides, they use mechanical cultivation, mulching, or flame weeding. Compost spreaders, rotary cultivators, and cover crop seeders become standard machines rather than optional. A 100-acre organic grain operation might use a flail chopper to process on-farm residues and a manure spreader rated for 3-5 tons per pass, where a conventional operation would rely on herbicide sprayers.
Certification and market structure
Organic status requires three-year transition periods during which land receives no prohibited inputs but cannot yet carry the label. Third-party inspectors audit farms annually, checking input records, soil samples, and pest management logs. This creates overhead costs that small operations struggle to absorb; a 50-acre operation might spend 1500-2500 dollars annually on certification. Consequently, organic farming tends to concentrate in high-value crops (vegetables, berries, specialty grains) and near urban markets where consumers accept a 20-50 percent price premium.
Livestock in organic systems face strict housing and grazing requirements. Dairy cows must have pasture access, antibiotics are prohibited (even for disease treatment in many schemes), and synthetic growth promoters are forbidden. Feed must be certified organic. These constraints reduce production per animal but appeal to consumers willing to pay more for milk, eggs, and meat certified as organic.
The term carries philosophical weight beyond regulation. Early advocates in the 1940s and 1950s, including J. I. Rodale and Sir Albert Howard, framed organic farming as a complete system restoring soil carbon and microbial life, not merely as a list of prohibited chemicals. This distinction matters: a farm using only allowed inputs but mining soil or relying on monoculture may be certified organic yet fail the broader vision. Equipment suppliers and farm advisors often emphasize this tension when discussing long-term productivity on organic land.
