A paddy field is an agricultural plot deliberately flooded to a depth of 5 to 15 centimeters during the rice growing season. The standing water serves multiple purposes: it controls weeds, moderates soil temperature, provides a medium for certain rice varieties to develop properly, and helps distribute nutrients. The field is typically divided into level terraces or bunded sections to maintain uniform water depth across uneven terrain.

Paddy fields are prepared by plowing submerged soil into a thick slurry, which seals the field bottom and helps level it. Rice seedlings are transplanted into this prepared mud by hand or mechanical transplanter. Water is maintained throughout the growing cycle, often for 120 to 150 days depending on variety and climate. Drainage occurs gradually in the weeks before harvest to allow soil to firm enough for machinery to enter without sinking.

Water management and infrastructure

Paddies require reliable water supply, typically from rivers, reservoirs, or groundwater accessed by pumps or gravity-fed channels. In regions with distinct seasons, fields may flood during monsoon months, while dry-season paddies depend entirely on irrigation systems. Bunds, or field banks, are compacted earth walls that can be 30 to 60 centimeters high, serving to contain water and provide footpaths for workers and equipment.

The term 'paddy' derives from the Malay word 'padi', meaning rice plant. Paddy fields are concentrated in South and Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, India, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, though rice paddies are also significant in Japan, China, and parts of West Africa. They remain labor-intensive, though mechanization of transplanting and harvesting has expanded in recent decades.

Long-term paddy management involves balancing water retention against pest control and soil health. Continuous flooding can degrade soil structure and reduce yields if not managed carefully; many farmers rotate crops or leave fields fallow periodically. Acid sulfate soils in some regions require careful water level management to prevent chemical degradation of the field.
