A device, generally constructed from fabric, that is designed to employ air resistance to control the fall of an object or person, causing them to float instead of falling.

A parachute is a fabric canopy designed to create aerodynamic drag and slow the fall of an object or person through air. The basic assembly consists of a main canopy (typically nylon ripstop), suspension lines (cord connecting the canopy to the load), a deployment bag or container, and a ripcord or automatic activation system. The canopy itself is divided into cells or gores, a construction that maintains shape under the pressures of deployment and descent.

In aviation maintenance, parachutes fall into two primary categories: emergency parachutes for crew bailout, and cargo or extraction parachutes used to slow objects during airdrop. Personnel parachutes are designed for use at altitudes above 2,000 feet and descent rates around 12 to 18 feet per second. Cargo parachutes include drogue parachutes (smaller diameter, deployed first to stabilize loads) and main parachutes that may be 28 feet, 35 feet, or larger in diameter depending on load weight. Each type has specific weight limits and deployment parameters.

Parachutes require rigorous inspection and maintenance according to strict military and civilian standards. Canopies must be checked for fabric tears, seam degradation, and moisture absorption. Suspension lines are inspected for abrasion and proper tension. The ripcord assembly and automatic activation devices (barometric or electronic timers) must function reliably. Most personnel parachutes require repacking by certified parachute riggers every 120 days, whether used or not. Heat, ultraviolet light, and improper storage degrade nylon significantly, making storage conditions critical.

The term derives from the French words parachute, combining para (against, or to guard against) and chute (fall). The modern parachute design took shape in the early 20th century; before powered flight it was a theoretical device. The silk canopies of early designs gave way to nylon ripstop in the 1940s, which provided superior strength-to-weight ratio and faster drying. Today's emergency parachutes still use rectangular or round canopies, though design variants include ram-air canopies (with internal pressurization cells that improve glide characteristics) used primarily in sport jumping.

Failures occur from improper packing, line entanglement, canopy tears, and corrosion of metal hardware. Moisture trapped in a canopy during storage promotes mildew and can corrode suspension line attachment points. Oxidized ripcord springs may not deploy the bag correctly. In operational aviation, parachute readiness is part of the crew equipment check; a malfunctioning personnel parachute is a red-line discrepancy that grounds the aircraft. Extraction parachutes installed on cargo doors or extraction systems must be inspected for canopy condition and proper attachment to the load sling.
