In aviation, a parasite is a complete aircraft, typically a fighter or reconnaissance machine, that is physically carried aloft beneath or within a larger mother ship and released in flight to conduct its own mission. Rather than taking off under its own power, the parasite conserves fuel and extends its range by riding to altitude and release point mounted on the carrier aircraft, then separating to fight, scout, or intercept independently. The mother ship absorbs the weight penalty and fuel cost of the journey out; the parasite enters combat fresh.
The concept emerged in the 1930s as a way to extend fighter range in naval and reconnaissance roles. The United States experimented with parasites extensively: the Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk was designed to launch from the airship USS Akron, using a trapeze mechanism to attach and detach mid-air. The British built the Republic F-84 Thunderjet as a parasite to be carried by the piston-engined Consolidated B-36 bomber. Later, the U.S. Air Force modified B-36 bombers to carry Republic F-84F Thunderstreaks on pylons, released over enemy territory. The Soviet Union pursued similar schemes with their Voron (Raven) concept, pairing jet parasite fighters with bomber mother ships.
Operational parasites faced serious practical limits. The trapeze or pylon release mechanism had to function reliably at speed and altitude, separation had to occur cleanly without collision, and the carrier aircraft's performance suffered severely from the added weight and drag. Integration of fuel systems, electrical interconnects, and air data between parent and parasite added maintenance complexity. Parasites were also vulnerable immediately after release, before gaining separation and maneuvering room, and if the mother ship was attacked or damaged before launch, the parasite was lost without being used.
Improvements in jet engine range, the rise of aerial refueling, and the development of standoff weapons made parasite aircraft obsolete by the 1950s. Long-range bombers could reach targets without escorts; fighters could boom-and-zoom with tanker support. The last operational parasite programs were shelved in the late 1950s. The term survives in aerospace engineering and historical discussion, but no modern aircraft are designed around the concept.
In current usage, "parasite" also appears in aerodynamic contexts to describe any non-functional component or store that increases drag without serving the primary mission. Landing gear fairings, antennas, and external fuel tanks are sometimes called parasitic devices when their drag is being calculated in performance analysis.
