A petroliferous formation or stratum is one that contains sufficient petroleum in its pores and fractures to make extraction economically viable. This is not merely rock with traces of oil, but rather a layer where hydrocarbons exist in quantities and concentrations that justify drilling, completion, and production operations. The term describes the geological condition itself, not the act of extraction.

Petroliferous rocks are typically sedimentary, most commonly sandstone, siltstone, or limestone with porosity ranging from 10 to 30 percent and permeability sufficient to allow fluid flow to a wellbore. The oil occupies the pore space alongside water and natural gas; the saturation, the percentage of pore volume filled with oil rather than water, determines productive capacity. A formation may be petroliferous but remain economically dormant if oil saturation is marginal or if surrounding seal rocks (shales, evaporites) are inadequate to trap migrating hydrocarbons.

Recognition and Evaluation

Petroliferous intervals are identified through core analysis, well logs, and pressure testing. A core sample showing visible oil staining, fluorescence under ultraviolet light, or positive results from oil content measurements indicates a petroliferous zone. Log signatures, particularly low density, high porosity, and high resistivity, support the interpretation. Not all petroliferous formations produce at commercial rates; capillary pressure, relative permeability, and fluid viscosity all affect the fraction of oil that can be mobilized toward a well.

The broader geological framework determines whether a petroliferous formation will become productive. It must lie within a petroleum system: a source rock (where organic material was buried and heated to generate oil), a migration pathway, the petroliferous reservoir itself, and a seal. If any element is missing or timing is wrong, a petroliferous layer yields nothing. Conversely, a thin petroliferous interval with excellent seal and high oil saturation can be far more valuable than a thicker but water-saturated sandstone.

The term is descriptive rather than predictive. A formation identified as petroliferous in one area may be non-petroliferous a few kilometers away due to changes in depositional environment, seal integrity, or charge. Drilling risk is managed by integrating seismic mapping, analogues from nearby fields, and basin modeling to constrain the probability that a prospect contains a petroliferous interval of sufficient size and quality to cover costs.
