Thirty-twomo, or 32mo, is a book format produced by folding a single printed sheet five times to create thirty-two leaves, or sixty-four page surfaces. It is one of the smallest standard book sizes in traditional signature-based printing, typically yielding a finished page dimension of around 5 by 3.5 inches, though exact measurements vary with the parent sheet size and binding style. The term comes from the denominator in the signature: a single sheet folded to produce thirty-two divisions.
The format emerges from the practical mathematics of sheet-fed printing. A large parent sheet (commonly a deckle-edged or cut foolscap, crown, or demy sheet) is printed on both sides with page images laid out in a specific sequence called a work-and-turn or sheetwise pattern. The pressman then folds the sheet methodically, typically valley-fold then mountain-fold, to nest the pages correctly. After folding, the spine edge must be trimmed to separate the leaves and open the folds.
Thirty-twomo books are labor-intensive to produce by hand folding because each signature requires five precise folds and careful handling to avoid misregistration. Historically, they were common for small devotional books, chapbooks, and reference manuals where durability was less critical than portability and cost per unit. Modern binderies rarely fold 32mo signatures; automated folder-gluer machines can handle them, but the economics favor larger formats like octavo (8vo) or quarto (4to) for most commercial runs. When 32mo does appear today, it is usually in specialty academic or art book production where the small trim size is intentional.
Nomenclature and related formats
The 'mo' suffix derives from the Latin monomial forms: folio (1 fold, 2 leaves), quarto (2 folds, 4 leaves), octavo (3 folds, 8 leaves), sextodecimo or sixteenmo (4 folds, 16 leaves), and thirty-twomo (5 folds, 32 leaves). Each represents a halving of the leaf size from the previous format. Printers and binders use these terms to specify a signature structure independent of actual paper stock, because a 32mo signature folded from a large foolscap sheet will yield a different absolute page size than one folded from a smaller sheet.
Thirty-twomo sits at the margin of practical hand binding. Beyond five folds, the spine becomes too thick, the paper layers resist trimming evenly, and the cost of labor overwhelms any savings from reduced paper waste. For this reason, very small books (such as pocket Bibles or miniature editions) are assembled from multiple 32mo or even 64mo signatures sewn together, rather than folded from a single enormous sheet. Understanding 32mo is chiefly valuable to conservators, hand binders, and historians of print technology; it marks the practical limit of the traditional folded-signature method.
