pick-at-will: weave any color you want, when you want
A pick-at-will loom is a weaving machine equipped with multiple shuttle boxes arranged along the reed, allowing the operator to select which shuttle enters the shed on each pick (the passage of the weft across the warp). Unlike a standard loom where a single shuttle cycles predictably, pick-at-will looms let you change weft color or yarn type on demand, giving you direct control over the woven pattern without stopping the loom or manually threading a new shuttle.
The mechanism relies on a selector mechanism, traditionally mechanical but later cam or electronic driven, that routes the shuttle to the correct box based on the weaver's input. A pick-at-will loom might have anywhere from four to twelve or more shuttle boxes. The operator picks colors by hand lever, foot pedal, or electronic control depending on the loom's age and sophistication. This flexibility was especially valuable for patterned fabrics, checks, stripes, and small decorative elements where changing yarn frequently was necessary but stopping the loom would be inefficient.
Why the term matters in production
The advantage lay in speed and versatility. On a traditional loom, weaving a pattern that required frequent color changes meant either manual intervention or mechanical program cards (as on a Jacquard). A pick-at-will loom worked continuously while the operator simply selected shuttles; production stayed smooth and labor cost stayed lower than stopping for hand changes. The trade-off was the added complexity of multiple shuttle boxes and their mechanical selectors, which required more maintenance and setup time.Pick-at-will looms became standard for mills producing cotton and wool dress goods, suiting, and decorative textiles from the early-to-mid twentieth century onward. They were particularly common in British mills. The system is less common today because modern shuttleless looms (rapier and air jet) offer even greater flexibility and speed, though some narrow-goods and specialty mills still operate pick-at-will equipment for niche applications where the weave is stable but color variety is essential.
The weakness of the system was mechanical complexity and cost of installation. Shuttle collision was always a risk if the selector missed or if timing drifted, and worn mechanism parts could cause misses that damaged both cloth and equipment. The term itself reflects the operator's experience: you picked whichever shuttle box you wanted on each pick, rather than following a fixed cycle or relying on external program control.
