The picokatal is a unit of catalytic activity in the International System of Units, representing 10-12 katals. It measures the rate at which an enzyme or catalyst accelerates a chemical reaction by lowering its activation energy, expressed as the number of moles of substrate converted per second. One picokatal corresponds to one picomole per second of product formation under specified conditions.

The katal itself, adopted by SI in 1999, replaced the older unit "enzyme unit" (U), which equaled one micromole per minute. One katal equals 60 million units. The picokatal emerges naturally when quantifying enzymatic activity at very small scales: in cell lysates, dilute protein preparations, or when measuring trace enzyme contamination in purified reagents. Clinical biochemistry, biotechnology process development, and pharmaceutical quality assurance all employ this unit when characterizing enzyme performance.

Practical use in enzyme assays

Enzyme kinetics are typically measured by monitoring substrate consumption or product accumulation over time. When working with femtomolar or attomolar enzyme concentrations, or when reaction rates are inherently slow, results naturally fall into the picokatal range. For example, a poorly active variant enzyme or a denatured sample might show catalytic activity measured in hundreds of picokatals rather than millikanatals. Reporting in picokatals avoids writing long strings of negative exponents and improves readability in laboratory notebooks and technical reports.

The naming convention follows SI prefixes rigorously: kilo-, milli-, micro-, nano-, pico-. Laboratories must specify both the unit and the substrate, temperature, and pH under which the activity was determined, since the same enzyme exhibits different catalytic rates under different conditions. A specification like "1.5 pkat at 37 degrees Celsius, pH 7.4, using NADH as substrate" conveys precise information.

Confusion can arise when legacy data uses enzyme units or when non-SI countries or specific industries retain older catalytic activity metrics. Always verify the source document. Modern instruments and data processing systems typically output results in SI units, but older chromatography software, spectrophotometers, or laboratory information management systems may require manual conversion or configuration changes to report in katals and its multiples.
