A pig farm is an enclosed or semi-enclosed facility where swine are bred, reared, and fattened for meat, hide, and byproducts. Modern commercial pig farms operate as controlled-environment systems, ranging from 500 to 5,000 animals or more per site, with sows housed in gestation crates or group pens and finishing pigs in slatted-floor barns. The facility itself is the primary production asset: ventilation systems maintain temperature and air quality, automated feeding lines dispense grain-based rations, slatted floors allow waste to drop into collection pits, and water systems supply drink lines or nipples throughout.
Pig farms are classified by function and scale. Breeding operations focus on sow management and piglet production, with farrowing crates designed to prevent crushing of newborn piglets. Nursery facilities house weaned pigs (typically 7 to 28 days post-weaning) at high stocking density to manage health and growth. Finishing barns raise pigs from weaning weight (around 7 kilograms) to market weight (typically 110 to 135 kilograms) over 16 to 22 weeks. Many commercial farms are segregated multi-site operations, with breeding stock on one location and finishing pigs on separate premises to reduce disease transmission.
The infrastructure demands are substantial. Finishing barns require 0.7 to 1.0 square meter per pig under conventional slatted-floor systems. Ventilation must remove ammonia, carbon dioxide, and moisture while managing ambient temperature; heating is essential in cold climates, and evaporative cooling systems prevent heat stress in summer. Waste management is a major component: slurry (liquid manure mixed with flush water) is collected in below-slat pits and either stored in lagoons or exported to cropland as fertilizer. Feed storage silos, typically holding 30 to 50 tons of grain, sit adjacent to mills or on-site.
Common problems and constraints
Disease outbreaks, particularly swine influenza, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), and porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), can devastate productivity and force costly herd depopulation. Environmental regulations increasingly restrict pig farm placement near water sources and populated areas because of ammonia emissions and runoff risk. Labor shortages in market-wage countries have driven investment in automated feeding, mucking (manure removal), and climate control systems. Feed conversion ratios (the kilograms of feed per kilogram of gain) average 2.5 to 3.0 for finishing pigs; any rise signals disease or poor management.
Pig farming sits within a vertically integrated supply chain dominated by a small number of large processors and genetics suppliers. Genetics companies (breeding nucleus herds) supply breeding stock to multiplier farms, which then supply replacement breeding animals to commercial farms. Most commercial farms operate under production contracts with integrators, who provide piglets, feed, and technical oversight while the farm owner supplies land, buildings, and labor. This model concentrates profit margin at the processor level and transfers price and production risk to farm operators.
