A broadcaster is a machine that throws seed, granulated fertilizer, or similar materials outward in a wide dispersal pattern across the ground. Unlike a precision drill that places individual seeds in rows, a broadcaster distributes material more or less evenly over a given area, making it useful for establishing pasture, cover crops, or applying dry amendments across large acreage quickly.
Most broadcasters work on a simple principle: material feeds from a hopper onto a spinning disk or set of spinning disks mounted below or to the side. As the disk rotates at high speed, the centrifugal force throws particles outward and forward in a spreading pattern. The effective width varies with material type and disk speed, typically ranging from 8 to 15 meters for tractor-mounted units. Handheld broadcast spreaders, used for smaller plots or garden work, operate the same way but cover only a few meters per pass.
Variants and applications
Tractor-mounted broadcasters come as integral PTO (power take-off) driven units or as trailed machines with their own wheels. Ground-drive models allow the spreading mechanism to be powered by contact with the soil as the machine moves, useful where PTO shafts are unavailable. Broadcast spreaders handle seed sizes from fine clover down to larger beans, and dry fertilizer products including lime, superphosphate, and urea. Wet or tacky materials tend to bridge and clump in the hopper, making broadcasting unsuitable for some formulations.
The main limitation is uniformity: broadcasters inherently produce uneven distribution, with material settling more densely near the path than at the outer edges. Wind affects the pattern significantly, and operators must overlap passes to achieve reasonable evenness across a field. This trade-off between speed and precision is why broadcasters dominate pasture renovation and cover crop work, where exact spacing is less critical than with row crops.
The term broadcaster distinguishes these machines from pneumatic seed drills, which use air pressure to convey seed to individual furrows, and from spreaders designed for fine-grain products like granulated pesticides. In British usage the same machines are sometimes called spreaders; Australian terminology occasionally uses the term to refer specifically to boomless spreaders used on tractors without hydraulic boom systems.
