Pink salt in textile production is rock salt (halite) that has taken on a reddish or salmon hue from iron oxide impurities or clay minerals mixed through the mineral deposit. It arrives at the mill either as large crystalline chunks or crushed to granular form, depending on the supplier and intended use. The color itself carries no functional advantage; it is a visible marker of mineral content that textile operators need to account for.
The iron oxide and clay minerals that give pink salt its color can interfere with dye uptake and fiber behavior during wet processing. When dissolved in water for brine preparation, these impurities remain in suspension or settle as sludge, potentially clogging pipe fittings and pump intakes. This is why many mills prefer refined white salt despite higher cost. In some older mills, pink salt was simply accepted as standard and filtered before use; in modern operations, the extra handling step often makes refined salt more economical overall.
Pink salt comes primarily from inland salt deposits rather than sea salt operations. The Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan and similar continental salt beds produce it in quantity. Some suppliers offer washed pink salt, which reduces but does not eliminate the impurity problem. The shade varies from pale rose to deep brick red depending on iron oxide concentration; darker batches indicate higher contamination and greater risk of processing problems.
In dyeing workflows, pink salt is occasionally used deliberately in smaller quantities for specific mordant or fixative steps where the iron content is actually desired, though this is rare. More commonly, it appears in mills that process lower-grade textiles where cost control outweighs quality concerns, or in regions where refined salt supply is limited. Testing incoming pink salt batches for iron content and clay levels helps predict whether additional filtration will be needed.
