plate: the inked master that prints your image
A printing plate is a flat surface, typically metal, that carries an image in relief, intaglio, or planographic form and transfers ink onto paper or other substrates during the press run. The image exists as a physical pattern on the plate surface: raised areas that hold ink, recessed areas that reject it, or chemically differentiated zones that attract or repel water and oil-based inks depending on the process.
Letterpress and relief printing use raised metal or polymer plates, where the printed portions stand proud of the surface by 0.918 inches (type-high standard). Gravure and intaglio plates work oppositely: the image sits recessed into the surface, and ink fills the valleys while a doctor blade removes ink from the flat areas. Lithography uses stone or aluminum plates where image areas are chemically treated to accept oil ink while non-image areas accept water, creating a resist without any physical depth difference.
Flexographic plates, made from photopolymer or rubber, mount on sleeves or shafts for high-speed web printing on film, foil, and corrugated board. Gravure cylinders, a rotary variant, are engraved or etched steel or copper tubes, often using electronic scanning to cut millions of tiny cells that hold precise ink volumes. Each cylinder can be 30 to 40 inches wide and weigh several hundred pounds.
Plate wear and replacement
Plates degrade through repeated impression cycles, chemical attack from press solutions, and mechanical abrasion from wiping and cleaning. A halftone gravure plate may print 2 to 5 million impressions before dot degeneration becomes visible. Letterpress plates wear faster on high spots and can be re-faced or re-cast if the original image remains valuable. Lithographic plates suffer from scumming (unwanted ink on non-image areas) and spotting (missing ink in image areas) as the chemical resist breaks down, typically lasting 100,000 to 500,000 impressions depending on ink chemistry and fountain solution maintenance.
The term plate derives from its literal form: a flat piece. In digital offset printing, the traditional plate has been largely replaced by direct imaging systems that write chemistry directly onto the press cylinder, or by thermal and inkjet plates burned or jetted on the press itself. However, the nomenclature persists, and digital printing operators still speak of plating a press, maintaining centuries-old vocabulary for a fundamentally different technology.
