Plasticulture is the deliberate deployment of plastic materials, usually polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film, across growing areas to manipulate soil temperature, moisture, light, and pest populations. The practice extends from small vegetable plots to large-scale row crop operations, where plastic sheeting serves as a durable, reusable, or disposable barrier between soil and air. Unlike passive mulching with straw or cardboard, plastic film creates a sealed microclimate that growers can engineer to specification.

The most common form is black polyethylene mulch, typically 25 to 50 microns thick, laid over prepared beds before planting. Black film suppresses weeds by blocking light penetration while warming the soil by 5 to 10 degrees Celsius through the greenhouse effect, which accelerates germination and extends growing seasons in temperate zones. Clear or translucent film warms faster but permits weed growth; some growers use dual-layer films (black below, clear above) or reflective metallized film to confuse certain insect pests. Drip irrigation tubing often runs beneath or alongside the mulch, concentrating water at root level while minimizing evaporation and foliar disease pressure.

Practical deployment and variants

Installation requires a film layer to be rolled and anchored across beds, with edges buried, weighted, or pinned. Commercial operations use motorized laying machinery that simultaneously unrolls film, applies drip lines, and seats the edges. Biodegradable films made from polylactic acid (PLA) or starch-based polymers have entered the market to reduce disposal burden, though they degrade on timescales of 60 to 180 days depending on soil temperature and microbial activity. Perforated or slitted film allows rainfall through but retains many mulching benefits; non-perforated film demands supplemental irrigation but provides superior weed and moisture control.

Problems mount with age and careless removal. UV exposure degrades polyethylene after one to three seasons, fragmenting it into brittle shards that persist in soil and contaminate harvest equipment. Improper burial or extraction leaves plastic debris that tangles in tillers and combines, causing expensive downtime. Some jurisdictions restrict single-use plasticulture or mandate recovery and recycling programs. In regions with intense rainfall or humidity, plastic mulch can trap excessive moisture, breeding fungal infection despite improved drainage design.

Plasticulture dominates strawberry, melon, tomato, and pepper cultivation in subtropical and warm temperate climates, and extends northward as a season-extension tool. The practice originated in Japan in the 1950s and became standard in North America and Europe through the 1980s and 1990s. Its economic payoff rests on yield increases, labor savings from reduced hand weeding, and earlier market access; the petrochemical input cost and disposal burden remain persistent trade-offs.
