Ploughing is the mechanical inversion and loosening of soil using a plough, typically drawn by tractor or animals, creating a series of parallel furrows. The primary purpose is to break compacted earth, bury surface vegetation and weeds, incorporate organic matter, and prepare a seedbed with appropriate tilth for sowing. A single pass of the plough turns the soil to a depth usually between 150 mm and 300 mm, depending on the plough type and soil conditions.

The mouldboard plough remains the standard design. Its curved steel blade lifts a slice of soil, inverts it, and deposits it in the adjacent furrow, burying surface debris. Rotary ploughs, equipped with rotating tines, break soil more finely and suit wetter ground. Deep ploughs, working at 400 mm or more, reach compacted subsoil layers (hardpan) and are used less frequently but are essential for breaking through restrictive layers that impede drainage or root penetration. Disc ploughs, using concave steel discs instead of a mouldboard, perform well in stony or sticky clay soils where conventional ploughs clog.

Soil type and moisture content govern ploughing success. Heavy clay ploughed when too wet becomes a compacted, cloddy mess; ploughed too dry, it forms large unbreakable lumps. Sandy soils accept ploughing across a wider moisture range. Depth is set by the plough's furrow wheels and adjustable frame; working depth changes with soil density, stone content, and tractor power. A 4-furrow plough at 200 mm depth covering one hectare requires roughly 2 to 3 hours depending on soil resistance and tractor speed, typically 8 to 12 km/h.

When ploughing is and isn't done

Autumn ploughing after harvest leaves soil exposed through winter, allowing frost action to break clods and organic matter to decompose. Spring ploughing is necessary where autumn conditions are too wet or where protecting winter-sown stubble is desired. Intensive continuous cropping without ploughing can allow compaction, pest larvae, and weeds to build up; however, minimum tillage and direct drilling systems reduce or eliminate ploughing to conserve soil structure and organic matter. The choice between ploughing and reduced-tillage methods depends on crop type, machinery investment, soil condition, and conservation goals.

The term ploughing derives from Old English ploh, related to the Proto-Germanic root for a carved or furowed object. The activity predates the plough itself by millennia, originally performed with simple wooden implements dragged by oxen; the shift to steel mouldboards in the 18th and 19th centuries accelerated agricultural productivity. Modern precision farming now uses GPS guidance and variable-depth controls, yet the fundamental action remains unchanged: inversion and aeration of soil as the foundation of seed establishment.
