A plug is a tapered wooden dowel, typically made from softwood offcuts or hardwood, driven into a hole drilled or chiseled into brick, stone, or mortar to create a nailable surface. It serves as an intermediate anchor point where nails or screws cannot otherwise grip. The plug is wedged tight enough to resist the outward force of a driven nail, yet soft enough that a nail point will bite into it cleanly without splitting.

The standard plug measures roughly 25 to 38 mm long and 12 to 16 mm in diameter, sized to fit common wall-chase holes or drilled brick cavities. Masonry walls lack the internal structure of timber framing, so a plug bridges the gap between the hard, unforgiving substrate and the fastener. Once inserted, it becomes part of the assembly, invisible behind plasterboard, architrave, or trim. Plugs are usually left slightly proud of the surface so they can be trimmed flush once the nail is driven home.

Variants and materials

Wooden plugs remain the traditional choice in conservation work and heritage masonry. Plastic expanding plugs, driven by the same principle but using different anchor mechanics, have largely replaced wooden ones for heavy loads in new construction. However, wooden plugs are still preferred where traditional appearance matters, where vibration tolerance is needed, or where the substrate is too soft or friable for modern expansion anchors. Hardwood plugs hold better in lime mortar than in cement-based mortar, since they can grip irregularly.

The plug must be dry before insertion; damp wood will swell and split the surrounding mortar or brick. If the wall is repeatedly knocked or vibrated, the wood can eventually work loose and the nail will fail. Poor installation, including failure to seat the plug firmly into its hole, is a common source of fixing failure on internal partitions. In renovated buildings, plugs driven into old lime mortar often grip better than those in modern cement, because the mortar is softer and allows the wood to embed itself more fully.

The term remains in use across Britain and Europe, though the trade increasingly refers to plastic cavity fixings by type rather than by the generic word 'plug'. On site, the distinction between a wooden plug and a plastic Rawlplug or similar proprietary anchor is often blurred in casual speech, but the underlying principle remains: a yielding intermediate element inserted into unyielding substrate to receive a fastener.
