PMV: armored transport for hostile terrain
A protected mobility vehicle is a light armored car designed to carry personnel safely through areas where gunfire, shrapnel, or improvised explosive devices pose a threat. Unlike main battle tanks, PMVs prioritize speed and tactical deployment over heavy firepower, making them standard issue for military patrols, convoy escort, and peacekeeping operations in active conflict zones.
PMVs typically seat four to six occupants and weigh between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds fully loaded. The hull uses welded steel or composite armor plates arranged at oblique angles to deflect rounds rather than absorb them. Ballistic protection is rated to specific standards, such as NATO STANAG levels, specifying which ammunition calibers the vehicle can withstand at given ranges. Windows are reinforced polycarbonate; doors have reinforced frames and often contain additional ceramic inserts.
The term encompasses many variants and designs. Military forces deploy purpose-built models like the Fuchs, Cougar, and Jackal platforms alongside heavily modified commercial trucks fitted with armor kits. Some PMVs are open-topped for maximum visibility and rapid dismount; others are fully enclosed with hatches for crew protection. Engine placement, suspension geometry, and weight distribution are critical: a poorly balanced armor package can render the vehicle unstable on slopes or unsuitable for river crossings that unarmored versions handle easily.
Vulnerabilities and operational limits
The term "protected" is conditional. PMVs offer no defense against heavy machine gun fire, anti-tank weapons, or direct mine strikes. Roadside bombs remain the leading cause of PMV casualties; belly armor and V-shaped hulls mitigate blast effects but do not eliminate them. Heat buildup inside closed variants can degrade crew performance during prolonged operations in desert climates. Fuel consumption rises sharply with armor weight, reducing operational range.PMV platforms are purpose-built when protection requirements are known in advance, but retrofit armor is common when forces must rapidly upgrade existing light vehicles. The distinction matters: a retrofitted Humvee behaves differently from a purpose-designed PMV with integrated suspension and drivetrain. Military procurement often favors modular designs that allow armor to be added, removed, or upgraded without redesigning the core vehicle.
