CCS1: the North American EV fast-charging standard

CCS1, or Combined Charging System Type 1, is the AC and DC charging connector standard adopted in North America for battery electric vehicles. The plug itself combines two charging pathways in a single mechanical unit: the original five-pin J1772 connector for AC Level 1 and Level 2 charging sits above a pair of large DC power contacts, allowing a single inlet on the vehicle to handle both everyday trickle charging and high-speed DC fast charging at stations along highways.

The DC contacts in CCS1 are positioned directly below the J1772 pins and carry substantially higher voltage and amperage than the AC side. Modern CCS1 fast chargers deliver between 50 kW and 350 kW, with voltages ranging from 200V to 920V depending on the charger and vehicle capability. The connector itself is rated for currents up to 200 amps on the DC side, though most current production vehicles charge at lower rates. The physical plug is bulkier than the J1772 alone, particularly when handling high-amperage connections.

CCS1 versus other standards

CCS1 competes with Tesla's proprietary connector in North America, though Tesla has begun adopting CCS1 on newer models. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, CCS2 is the standard; it uses a larger, rounded connector based on the Type 2 (Mennekes) AC inlet. CCS2 can deliver higher power more efficiently due to its larger contact surfaces and cooling provisions. China uses a third variant. This fragmentation has forced many public charging networks to install multiple connector types at a single pedestal.

The J1772 portion of CCS1 allows controlled charging via a pilot signal that communicates between the charger and vehicle, negotiating power delivery based on temperature, battery state, and grid conditions. The DC pathway bypasses this negotiation in traditional fast chargers, though newer bidirectional CCS1 chargers (for vehicle-to-grid applications) reinstate communication during DC charging. Thermal management is critical: prolonged high-power charging can degrade both the connector contacts and the vehicle's battery management system if cooling is inadequate.

CCS1 gained traction after 2015 as manufacturers including General Motors, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia committed to the standard. Charging networks like Electrify America and EVgo built their networks around it. The plug's dominance in North America makes it a practical necessity for fleet operators and infrastructure planners, though installation costs, connection reliability issues, and heat dissipation challenges at the highest power levels remain active engineering concerns.
