polaski: firefighting ax-adz hybrid for breaking ground fast

A polaski is a single-handle tool that combines an ax blade on one side of the head with an adz (a downward-facing blade) on the other. The handle is typically 36 to 40 inches long, made from ash or fiberglass. The ax side cuts through vegetation and small timber; the adz side digs and scrapes soil. This dual-head design lets a firefighter clear and break ground in one movement, rather than switching between tools.

The tool was developed in the early 1900s by Edward Pulaski, a Forest Service ranger in Idaho who used it to cut the fireline that saved his crew during the 1910 Wallace Fire. The design proved so effective that it became standard issue across wildland fire crews. Modern polaskis weigh between 4 and 6 pounds depending on head material and handle construction; the ax edge is typically 3.5 to 4 inches wide.

Firefighters use the polaski to scrape away brush, fallen trees, and duff (decomposed organic matter) down to bare mineral soil, creating a cleared strip that stops or slows fire advance. The width of a fireline is typically 3 to 4 feet, and depth depends on fuel load and soil type. Some crews prefer the ax side for denser vegetation; others favor the adz for rocky or hard-packed ground. Weight and handle length vary slightly between regions and fire service branches, but the core design remains unchanged.

Durability issues include handle cracking from repeated impact and adz dulling in rocky soil. Fiberglass handles resist weather damage better than wood but can delaminate under heavy use. The ax edge requires regular sharpening; the adz benefits from a slightly duller edge to prevent chipping on stone. Most crews maintain their tools at a central cache and file or sharpen them between uses.

The polaski sits alongside other ground-breaking tools in wildfire suppression, including the mcleod (which has a rake-hoe combination), the shovel, and the mattock. Crews often deploy mixed tool kits depending on terrain and fuel type. The polaski remains dominant in brush and timber because its dual function reduces fatigue on long firelines and speeds the work on uneven ground where switching tools would waste time.
