In telephony, a prefix is a fixed sequence of digits dialed before the main telephone number to route the call through the switching network to the correct exchange or service type. The prefix tells the telephone exchange where to send the call and what kind of service the caller is requesting. In a traditional numbering plan, the prefix might be one to three digits and acts as a routing instruction embedded in the dialed number itself.
Different prefixes serve different purposes. In many countries, a prefix of 0 or 1 indicates a long-distance call requiring trunk access. Mobile phone prefixes, sometimes called mobile network codes (MNC), identify which cellular operator the number belongs to, allowing the network to route incoming calls to the correct base station. Toll-free and premium-rate numbers each carry their own prefixes, such as 800 or 900 in North America, so the network can apply the correct billing and service handling rules before connecting the call.
The prefix is distinct from the area code, though the two work together in most systems. In the North American Numbering Plan, for example, the area code (three digits) identifies a geographic region, while the exchange prefix (the next three digits) routes the call within that region to a specific local switch. In international dialing, the country code functions as a prefix to direct calls across borders.
Prefix management becomes critical in network planning. When a telecommunications operator allocates prefixes, it must ensure they are unique within the network to prevent call routing collisions. Changes to prefix assignments, such as splitting an area code or opening a new exchange, require careful coordination with all connected carriers and must be announced well in advance so customers update their dialing habits.
In modern networks handling SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and other packet-based systems, the prefix concept persists but operates differently. Software-based switches still parse prefixes from dialed strings to determine call routing, service type, and billing, though the prefix may now trigger a database lookup instead of a hardware switch configuration. The underlying logic remains: the prefix is the first signal that tells the network what to do with the call.
