To press is to apply deliberate force against a button, key, or lever, pushing it inward or downward from its resting position, then allowing it to return. This is the fundamental gesture for commanding machinery: you depress the control, the machine responds, you release it. The action is momentary, not sustained. Whether you are starting a punch press, engaging a limit switch, or signaling a pneumatic valve, the press is the interface between human intention and mechanical action.
The distinction matters because a press is not a hold. Holding a button (as on some emergency stops or jog controls) produces continuous input; pressing produces a single pulse or command. Industrial controls are designed around this assumption. A pushbutton on a lathe starts the spindle; you press it once, the spindle runs. A maintained contact switch would require you to keep your finger there indefinitely. Most machine tool buttons are momentary: they spring back after release.
Variants and implications
The force required to press varies by application. A soft membrane keypad on a CNC operator panel might require 65 to 70 grams of force; a hard industrial pushbutton typically needs 300 to 500 grams. The throw distance, the depth the button travels before activating, ranges from 2 to 4 millimeters on modern buttons, though older mushroom-head emergency stops may travel 8 to 12 millimeters. Electrical contacts close partway through the travel; mechanical tactile feedback (a small click or resistance change) often signals the switch point, allowing an operator to feel confirmation that the command was registered.
Presses on numbered keypads or sequence buttons are cumulative: a production worker on a stamping line might press a series of buttons in order to load material, position the die, and cycle the press. Each press triggers a discrete step. Failure to press (a missed button, a finger slip, a worn key) breaks the chain and often halts the cycle, which is why industrial keypads are larger and more tactile than consumer keyboards.
The term also applies to continuous-force operations: pressing a workpiece into a hydraulic die press uses the verb differently, but the underlying action, applying force to initiate and control a mechanical motion, is the same. In this context, press refers to sustained pressure held until the operation completes. The distinction between momentary (electrical button) and sustained (mechanical forming) presses is contextual but important for safety and procedure design.
