Tractor unit. Or, more specifically, the front part of a semi-trailer type truck, i.e., the tractor to which the trailer part attaches.

A prime mover in trucking is the tractor unit, the powered front section of an articulated (semi-trailer) rig. It carries the engine, transmission, cab, and fifth wheel coupling that supports and tows the unpowered trailer behind it. The prime mover does the work of propulsion; the trailer is merely cargo capacity in tow.
The fifth wheel is the mechanical pivot point, mounted on the frame behind the cab, that accepts the kingpin from the trailer's upper coupler. This connection allows the trailer to articulate, or swing, independently of the tractor during tight turns. The prime mover bears the weight through its rear axle suspension, typically a tandem axle arrangement with dual wheels on each side for load distribution.
Prime movers come in different classes by weight and power. A Class 8 truck, the heaviest, can weigh 15,000 to 18,000 pounds empty and pull a loaded trailer up to 80,000 pounds total. Engines range from 400 to 600 horsepower in conventional highway tractors, with torque ratings between 1200 and 1850 foot-pounds needed to move heavy loads from standstill. Sleeper-cab models include onboard bunks for drivers on long hauls; day-cab versions are lighter and suited to local pickup-and-delivery work.
The term prime mover comes from mechanical engineering, where it means any machine that converts energy into motion. In trucking, the name fits because the tractor is the only part generating power; without it, the trailer is inert. The phrase is also used in broader logistics to mean any primary power source in a system.
Common failure points include frame cracking at stress points near the fifth wheel, transmission slippage under full load, and bearing wear in the rear axles from sustained pulling. Brake issues are critical, as the prime mover must provide enough stopping force to decelerate both itself and a loaded trailer of equal or greater mass. Fifth wheel corrosion and loose kingpin connections are maintenance concerns that affect coupling reliability.
