A propeller shaft is a rotating tube that transmits torque from the transmission or gearbox to the differential at the rear axle in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. It is the mechanical link between the engine's power output and the wheels that need to turn, running longitudinally beneath the vehicle from the transmission tunnel to the rear axle housing.
The shaft itself is typically made from seamless steel tubing, often with a wall thickness between 2 and 4 mm depending on the vehicle weight and intended torque load. The shaft is supported by a centre bearing mounted on a rubber-insulated bracket bolted to the vehicle frame, which allows some vertical movement while isolating vibration. Both ends of the shaft connect via universal joints, or U-joints, which accommodate the changing angle between the transmission and axle as the suspension compresses and extends.
Failure modes and wear patterns
Propeller shafts fail when U-joints wear out or seize, when bearing grease dries and the centre bearing fails, or when the shaft itself bends or cracks from impact or overload. A worn shaft often produces a clunking noise when accelerating or decelerating, or a vibration felt through the floor at highway speeds. Balancing is critical: any imbalance creates oscillation that accelerates component wear and can damage the transmission or rear axle seals.
The term propeller shaft originates from the shaft's rotating motion resembling a ship's propeller, though it propels nothing itself but rather transfers rotational force. In some regions, particularly Britain and Europe, it is called a drive shaft or transmission shaft. Front-wheel-drive vehicles have no propeller shaft because the engine and transmission are mounted transversely directly above the front wheels.
