A propulsor is a propeller mounted within a short cylindrical duct or shroud, designed so that the entire unit can swivel or cant to change the direction of thrust. Unlike a conventional propeller that produces fixed-direction thrust, a propulsor redirects its output by rotating on a pivot or gimbal mount, making it useful for aircraft that need vertical lift, hover capability, or rapid directional changes without moving the fuselage.

The ducting around the propeller serves multiple purposes. It contains blade tip vortices and reduces noise by directing airflow more efficiently than an open prop. The duct also provides structural support for the pivot mechanism and protects the spinning blades from foreign object damage. The whole assembly is typically mounted in a pylon or pod that allows rotation in one or both axes, depending on the aircraft design. In tiltrotor aircraft like the V-22 Osprey, paired propulsors rotate from vertical (helicopter mode) to horizontal (airplane mode) during flight transitions.

Propulsors differ fundamentally from vectored-thrust nozzles used on fixed-turbine jets. A turbine nozzle deflects hot exhaust gas; a propulsor moves a mechanical propeller assembly. This distinction matters for maintenance: propulsors involve rotating machinery, bearings, and gearboxes within the duct, whereas nozzles are often simpler actuated flaps. Propulsors also typically operate at lower temperatures and higher mechanical loads.

Common problems and wear patterns

The pivot and swivel mechanism is the critical stress point. Repeated slewing loads from hover to forward flight fatigue the gimbal bearings and actuator rod ends. The duct itself can develop cracks at the root where it connects to the mounting pylon, especially in tiltrotor designs that endure large inertial loads during mode transitions. Blade erosion from salt spray or fine dust is faster in a ducted arrangement because the enclosure concentrates particle impact. Seals around the pivot degrade, allowing hydraulic fluid or grease to leak onto hot engine surfaces.

The term reflects its function: a propulsor propels by rotating its thrust vector, in contrast to a static propeller. In older literature and some military contexts, the word tiltprop or tilting propeller appears, though propulsor is now standard in modern specifications and maintenance manuals. Understanding propulsor behavior is essential for mechanics working on any aircraft that uses them, because the system couples aerodynamics, structural dynamics, and hydraulic control in ways that simple propeller installations do not.
