A system of telephone dialing in which each digit is transmitted as the equivalent number of pulses.

Pulse dialing is a method of transmitting telephone numbers through brief interruptions in the electrical circuit connecting your phone to the exchange. Each digit from 0 to 9 is encoded as a specific number of pulses, or breaks, in the DC current flowing down the telephone line. A digit 5, for example, sends five pulses; a 0 sends ten. The exchange's switching equipment counts these pulses mechanically or electronically to route the call to the correct destination.

This system powered rotary dial telephones for nearly a century. When you dialed a number on a rotary phone, your finger moved the dial clockwise to the desired digit, then released it. A mechanical cam inside the phone opened and closed the circuit contacts, creating the pulse train. The dial would return to its home position and you would move to the next digit. Audible clicks accompanied each pulse, and the mechanical action was relatively slow, making pulse dialing unsuitable for high-speed data transmission.

Tone Dialing and the Transition

Pulse dialing was gradually superseded by dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling, introduced in the 1960s and commonly called touch-tone dialing. DTMF transmits each digit as a combination of two audio frequencies, allowing much faster dialing and better compatibility with automated systems. However, pulse dialing persists in certain telephone exchanges and rural areas where older switching infrastructure remains in service. Many modern phones retain a pulse dialing mode for compatibility with legacy systems.

The distinction matters because some automated telephone systems, particularly in industrial settings and older PBX installations, still listen for pulse signals rather than DTMF tones. Attempting to use a touch-tone phone on a pulse-only exchange will fail to route calls correctly. Conversely, pulse dialing on DTMF-only systems may work poorly or not at all. Telecommunications technicians working with older installations must understand which signaling method the equipment expects.

Pulse dialing's slow speed, around 10 pulses per second, made it impractical for modem communications and data transmission. The transition to tone dialing was essential for the telephone network to support data, fax machines, and later, internet connectivity. Today pulse dialing survives almost entirely as a fallback mechanism in systems designed for broad compatibility rather than as a primary signaling method.
