A queen post is a vertical timber that carries the load of a roof truss across a wider span than a single king post can manage. Unlike a king post, which stands alone at the center of a truss, a queen post roof uses two posts positioned symmetrically, one on each side of center. Each queen post typically stands 4 to 8 feet from the nearest corner, depending on the overall span and load. This arrangement allows a truss to bridge openings of 40 to 60 feet or more, where a king post would be impractically tall and would require a heavy central post that interrupts the interior space.
In a queen post truss, the two vertical posts are connected by a horizontal tie beam that runs between them at their base, preventing them from spreading under the roof load. Diagonal struts, called queen post braces or simply braces, run from the top of each post up to the principal rafter on either side. These braces absorb the thrust from the rafters and transfer it down through the posts into the tie beam. The geometry means that load travels outward and downward rather than relying on a single central support, distributing the structural work more evenly across the span.
Queen post trusses became standard in timber construction for barns, warehouses, and older commercial buildings, especially in regions where large clear spans were needed without interior columns. Carpenters size the posts in hardwoods like oak, poplar, or pine, typically 8 by 10 inches or larger in cross-section. The method appeared frequently in 19th and early 20th century industrial architecture, when spanning a factory floor or grain storage without posts in the middle was a genuine design goal. The system is self-contained: once the posts and struts are cut and assembled, the truss acts as a single unit and can be lifted into place.
The name reflects an older hierarchy in truss design. A king post sits alone at the apex like a monarch; a queen post comes in a pair, like a crowned consort, and handles roughly double the span or more. The terminology persists even though the structural principle was well understood by the time the names became standard.
When inspecting a queen post truss, the critical failure points are the joints where the braces meet the posts and rafters, and the tie beam connection at the base of both posts. Movement or creep in these joints over decades can allow the truss to sag or the posts to tilt outward. Wood rot in the tie beam, the posts themselves, or the braces is common in older buildings exposed to moisture. A compromised queen post truss loses its ability to distribute load symmetrically and can suddenly transfer all pressure onto one post or into the wall plates, potentially triggering catastrophic failure.
