A railcar is a self-contained railway vehicle that carries passengers and operates under its own power, typically diesel or electric. Unlike a locomotive, which is designed to haul a train of unpowered coaches, a railcar is complete in itself: it has seating for passengers, onboard systems for propulsion and braking, and driver cabs at both ends to allow operation in either direction without turning the unit around.
Railcars range from single units to articulated pairs coupled permanently together. A single railcar might seat 80 to 150 passengers depending on interior layout and design. The driver cabs at each end eliminate the need for a turntable or reversing loop at the end of a line, making railcars economical for branch lines and shorter regional routes. The cab at the trailing end is typically unmanned during normal operation but fully equipped so the driver can move to it when the train reverses direction.
Power comes from a diesel engine with hydraulic or electric transmission in most cases, or from overhead catenary in fully electrified systems. Railcars are lighter per passenger than traditional locomotive-hauled trains and accelerate more quickly, making them suited to frequent-stop urban and suburban services. Their self-contained design means no separate locomotive is needed, reducing operating costs and staffing on lightly-used routes.
Common problems and wear points
The engine compartment and transmission in diesel railcars face thermal stress and contamination in regular service. Hydraulic systems require careful maintenance; fluid degradation reduces braking and acceleration response. Pantographs on electric railcars wear against catenary wire and need regular replacement. Door mechanisms and passenger seating take heavy wear in commuter service. Because both cabs must be fully functional, maintaining dual sets of instruments and controls adds complexity compared to a single-cab locomotive.
The term railcar is sometimes confused with motor coach or motorcar, which historically referred to early petrol-powered railway vehicles. In modern British usage, motorcar typically means a powered coach within a multiple unit train set. In North American usage, the distinction is clearer: a railcar operates independently, while a motor coach is part of a trainset with other coaches and may lack its own complete cab arrangement.
