A point on a railway system where goods (or passengers) are loaded, unloaded or transferred to other transport.

A railhead is a terminus or transfer point where a rail line ends or connects to other transport modes. It functions as a loading and unloading facility for freight, passengers, or both. The railhead may be a purpose-built station, a siding serving a factory or mine, or simply the end of track in developing regions where goods transition to trucks, ships, or pack animals for onward movement.

Railheads come in two broad categories. Terminal railheads are planned endpoints of a line, typically located in towns or at ports where infrastructure for warehousing, sorting, and transfer is established. Operating railheads extend into active resource extraction sites: coal mines, quarries, timber operations, or agricultural regions. These may be temporary or semi-permanent, advancing or retreating with the work frontier.

The practical demands of a railhead depend on its cargo and traffic volume. A high-volume freight railhead needs multiple sidings for train marshalling, loading cranes or conveyor systems, and storage capacity to buffer between rail and road schedules. A rural or mining railhead may consist of little more than a spur track, a hand-operated crane, and a few wagons waiting to be filled or emptied. Container terminals and ro-ro facilities represent the modern evolution, with specialized gantries and trailer hitching points.

The term is geographic and functional: it literally marks the head, or end, of the rail. The word emerged from colonial and frontier expansion, when railways pushed into undeveloped country and their termini became nodal points for commerce. A railhead was where the railroad authority's responsibility ended and cartage, shipping, or portage began.

Railheads remain critical to supply chains involving remote mines, ports without direct rail access, and intermodal logistics hubs. The efficiency of a railhead often determines the competitiveness of the entire supply chain feeding or fed by it. Bottlenecks at railheads, poor siding capacity, or inadequate transfer equipment can strangle traffic flow regardless of line capacity upstream.
