A cross-tie, also called a sleeper or railroad tie in American and British English respectively, is a horizontal beam laid perpendicular to the rails that supports their weight and maintains the distance between them. Each tie sits under both rails of the track, typically spaced 12 to 24 inches apart depending on rail weight and traffic speed. The tie transmits the vertical and lateral forces from passing trains down into the ballast bed, the gravel or stone layer beneath the track.

Wooden ties made from hardwoods like oak, hickory, or creosote-treated softwood remain the industry standard despite their age. A standard tie measures approximately 8.5 inches wide, 6 inches thick, and 8.5 feet long in North America. Concrete ties, introduced more widely in the 1970s, offer longer service life, often 50 years versus 30 to 40 for wood, but cost considerably more upfront. Steel ties exist but are uncommon except in specialized applications. The choice depends on rail type, expected tonnage, climate, and budget.

Fastening systems hold the rail to the tie. Traditional systems use spikes driven through a plate into the wood. Modern systems use elastic clips and spring fasteners that reduce rail movement and accommodate thermal expansion. These clips matter tremendously: poorly maintained fasteners allow the rail to shift laterally, creating gauge problems that derail trains or cause wheel climb and flange fracture.

Failure modes and maintenance

Wooden ties decay from moisture, fungal attack, and rot, particularly in the lower third where water pools. Cracking and splitting from repeated impact accelerate this. Concrete ties can fail through spalling of the surface due to freeze-thaw cycles or salt exposure, or debonding of the fastening pads. Both types can break from sudden impact or fatigue under heavy tonnage.

The term cross-tie reflects the tie's geometry: it runs across, or perpendicular to, the direction of travel. The similar term sleeper, standard outside North America, refers to the tie's function of allowing the track structure to "sleep" or rest on the ballast without direct rail contact. Track geometry, ballast condition, and tie spacing directly affect ride quality, wheel load distribution, and derailment risk. Aging ties are a chronic maintenance burden on Class I railroads, which replace hundreds of thousands annually.
