A wood burner is a steam locomotive equipped with a firebox designed to burn cordwood rather than coal or oil. The locomotive's boiler generates steam by burning wood logs, typically cut to lengths of 16 to 24 inches, which are fed into the firebox by the fireman. These machines were common on railways in forested regions where timber was abundant and cheaper than imported coal, particularly in North America during the 19th century and into the early 20th century.
Wood burners require several distinctive modifications compared to coal-burning locomotives. The grate area is usually larger and more open to accommodate the irregular shape and lower density of cordwood. The combustion chamber must be wider to allow for longer logs, and the ashpan beneath the grate needs substantial capacity since wood produces more ash than coal. Many wood burners featured a tall spark arrestor or diamond stack chimney to prevent embers from igniting lineside vegetation, a hazard that coal-burning locomotives did not present to the same degree.
Operational characteristics and efficiency
Wood fires burn hotter and require more frequent stoking than coal fires, making the fireman's job physically demanding. The heat output per pound of fuel is significantly lower than coal, roughly 40 to 50 percent, so larger quantities of wood must be carried. This meant wood burners needed either more frequent fuel stops or, more commonly, larger and heavier tender cars to store sufficient cordwood for a journey. Despite these drawbacks, wood remained economical in regions with ready timber supply and poor coal transportation infrastructure.
Locomotive design evolved around wood burning. Boiler proportions, water capacity, and draft arrangements all reflected the different combustion characteristics of wood. By the 1880s, as rail networks expanded into areas with coal access and as forest depletion made timber costlier, most wood burners were retired or converted to coal. Some survived on branch lines and logging railways well into the 1900s. The term persists in railway history more than in active service, but it remains essential vocabulary for understanding 19th-century locomotive development and regional railway economics.
