Ring time is the elapsed duration between the moment a telephone exchange sends a ringing signal to a line and the moment the called party answers. In circuit-switched telephony, this interval begins when the exchange applies ringing current (typically 90 volts AC at 20 Hz in North America, 25 Hz in Europe) to alert the subscriber, and ends when the line goes off-hook or when an answering machine or PBX accepts the call. Ring time is distinct from dial time (spent entering digits) and call duration (the conversation itself).
Ring time matters operationally because it directly impacts trunk utilization and network efficiency. In manual telephone exchanges, a long ring time consumed valuable switching resources. In modern VoIP and digital systems, prolonged ring time can increase infrastructure load, trigger timeout mechanisms, and degrade perceived service quality. Telecommunications carriers and PBX administrators monitor ring time as part of quality-of-service metrics and billing reconciliation. An unanswered call after a defined ring time (commonly 15 to 30 seconds) triggers call abandonment or transfer to voicemail.
Ring time depends on several factors: the responsiveness of the called party, the configuration of the telephone equipment (some systems reduce ringing intensity after 8 to 10 seconds to save power), and the presence of intermediate routing or queuing. Business telephone systems often allow administrators to set ring duration limits before forwarding calls to another extension or an automated attendant. Modern softphone and mobile applications may limit ring time algorithmically rather than through hardware constraints.
In traffic engineering, ring time is incorporated into call model calculations to distinguish between answered calls and abandoned calls. An abandoned call is one that reaches the called party's line but receives no answer before a threshold (often 3 to 6 rings, or 15 to 30 seconds total). This distinction affects how carriers report answer rates and how customer service centers measure agent performance and customer satisfaction.
