A roofbolter is a tracked or wheeled machine that drills holes into the roof of underground workings and installs tensioned bolts to reinforce the rock mass above. It addresses the fundamental hazard of mining: unstable roof. The machine typically carries a hydraulic drill unit mounted on a boom, a power pack, and bolt handling equipment, all integrated into a single mobile unit sized to fit within mine roadways.

The drilling cycle begins with positioning the boom against the roof, then drilling a vertical or near-vertical hole to a set depth, usually 1.2 to 2.4 metres depending on roof conditions and bolt type. The roofbolter then feeds a bolt (typically threaded steel rod with a resin or cement capsule, or a mechanical anchor) into the hole. Some machines apply immediate tension through a hydraulic tensioner; others rely on resin setting or mechanical expansion. The whole process takes minutes per bolt, allowing a single machine to support continuous advance of the working face.

Variants reflect different scale and geology. Smaller handheld pneumatic or electric roofbolters are used for spot bolting or in low seams. Larger jumbo units, common in development headings, may carry multiple drill booms and ancillary equipment like dust collection or water sprayers. Longwall mines use mobile roofbolters to supplement shield support systems. Hard-rock operations prefer fully grouted resin bolts; coal mines often use mechanical expansion anchors or quick-set capsules.

Roofbolter productivity and reliability depend heavily on ground response. Friable or coal-prone-to-spalling rock requires more frequent bolting and shorter spacing, slowing advance. Wet conditions demand sealed or quick-set anchors. Water ingress and resin bleeding are common failure modes. Bit wear, hydraulic leaks, and boom stiffness problems reduce availability in harsh underground climates.

The roofbolter emerged in the 1960s as mechanisation of a labour-intensive manual process, replacing hand drilling and hammer installation. Its adoption transformed mining safety standards and enabled faster development of deeper, higher-stress mines. Today it is essential equipment in hard-rock development and coal mining, often the first machine to follow blasting. Performance is measured in bolts per shift and metres of roadway secured per machine-hour.
