RV: motorized cabin for living and travel combined
An RV is a motor vehicle built or modified to provide sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities for its occupants. Unlike a car or truck that merely transports people, an RV serves as both transportation and temporary dwelling. The vehicle carries its own power systems, water supply, and waste tanks, making it self-contained for days or weeks away from fixed infrastructure.
The market divides RVs into several structural types. Class A motorhomes are built on a dedicated chassis with a large enclosed cabin above the driver's area, typically 30 to 40 feet long. Class B units are van-conversions, using a cargo van as the base and fitting sleeping and galley spaces inside, usually 16 to 22 feet long. Class C motorhomes sit on a commercial truck chassis with a cabin module extending above the cab, generally 20 to 32 feet. Travel trailers and fifth wheels are towed behind a pickup truck rather than self-propelled. Towable units range from small pop-ups under 15 feet to large fifth wheels exceeding 40 feet.
Power systems in RVs must handle dual demands. The main engine propels the vehicle; a separate auxiliary generator, often 5,000 to 10,000 watts, supplies 120-volt AC power to appliances and systems while parked. Battery banks, typically 12-volt DC with 100 to 400 amp-hours capacity, run lights, water pumps, and furnace fans independent of the generator. Freshwater tanks hold 30 to 100 gallons; grey water tanks collect sink and shower drain water; black water tanks, sealed and vented, receive toilet waste. Dumping stations at campgrounds or RV parks manage disposal of grey and black water.
Common failure points and maintenance
RV systems fail in characteristic ways. Water leaks develop around roof seams, windows, and door frames where exterior caulk deteriorates. Slide-out room mechanisms, hydraulic or electric, stick or fail after years of movement. Grey and black tank sensors give false readings due to residue buildup. Generator carburetors clog if fuel sits idle for months. Refrigerators, which run on propane or 120-volt AC, struggle to cool adequately if ventilation becomes blocked or cooling fins corrode. Plumbing systems freeze in cold climates without heat tape and insulation. Tire sidewalls crack and blowouts occur because RVs sit for long periods between uses, accelerating UV degradation.
RVs occupy a distinct position in the automotive trades. Dealerships specializing in RVs handle sales, service, and extended warranties. Mechanics trained in RV work must understand not just engines and transmissions but also propane systems, 120/240-volt AC wiring, water heating, and appliance repair. Body shops repair fiberglass, aluminum, and composite panels specific to RV construction. The industry produces tens of thousands of units annually in North America, with substantial secondary markets in used vehicles. Insurance and financing differ from standard vehicles due to living space and specialized equipment.
