Sable iron was a grade of wrought iron produced in Russia, particularly from the Urals region, prized for its superior purity and workability. It occupied the top tier of the Russian iron export market during the 18th and 19th centuries, when Russia dominated European iron supply. The material was characterized by low sulfur and phosphorus content, which made it less brittle and more suitable for critical applications than common iron.

The name "sable" likely derives from the Russian word for black, referring to the dark appearance of the metal or its surface finish. Russian iron generally was classified into grades: sable represented the finest, followed by ordinary Russia iron, and below that stamped or common grades. Sable iron typically cost roughly double the price of standard Russia iron, reflecting both its scarcity and the selective ore selection and processing required to produce it.

Use and market position

Sable iron was specified for applications demanding reliability and malleability: anchor stocks, tool steel production, cutlery blanks, and high-grade forgings. English iron masters and toolmakers sought it out when they needed material that would not fail under repeated stress or striking. The Baltic ports of Archangel and St. Petersburg were the main shipping points, making sable iron visible in London and Continental markets throughout the 18th century.

The trade diminished sharply after the 1870s as Swedish iron, particularly charcoal iron from the Bergslagen district, improved in consistency and reputation. Bessemer and open-hearth steel production also began displacing wrought iron for many applications that had traditionally demanded sable's properties. By the early 20th century, sable iron had become a specialist niche product and eventually faded from common commercial use.

Metallurgically, sable iron's advantage stemmed from careful ore selection and puddling furnace technique that minimized slag inclusion. Modern analysis shows sable iron samples typically contained less than 0.05 percent sulfur and less than 0.1 percent phosphorus, figures that were exceptional for wrought iron. Understanding sable iron remains useful for conservators and historians evaluating antique metalwork, as its presence often indicates deliberate specification for durability rather than economy.
