wetlook: high-gloss finish that mimics liquid shine
Wetlook is a surface finish applied to fabrics, polymers, leather, and coatings that produces a glossy, reflective appearance resembling a wet or freshly oiled surface. The effect is achieved through either a coating layer or a chemical treatment that increases surface gloss and often changes the fabric hand to become smoother and more fluid-looking. It is commonly used in fashion textiles, automotive trim, footwear, and decorative laminates where aesthetic impact matters more than traditional durability properties.
In textiles, wetlook is typically created by applying a polyurethane or acrylic resin topcoat to woven or knitted fabric, or by calendering (heat and pressure treatment) to compress and densify the surface. The coating fills microscopic surface irregularities and creates a uniform, light-reflective plane. Measured gloss values for true wetlook finishes generally exceed 85 on the 60-degree gloss meter scale. The finish also reduces surface friction, giving the cloth a slippery feel that is part of the visual illusion.
Wetlook has significant practical drawbacks. The glossy surface is prone to showing fingerprints, dust, and water spots. Coated fabrics exhibit reduced breathability and can feel plasticky against skin, making them unsuitable for base-layer apparel. The coating itself degrades under flexing and abrasion, so garments lose their appearance after repeated wear and washing. Adhesion failure between coating and substrate is common if the base fabric is not properly prepared, leading to peeling or delamination.
Application and variants
Wetlook coatings are applied by knife coating, roller coating, or spray methods during fabric finishing. Polyurethane coatings provide better elasticity and water resistance but are more expensive; acrylic coatings are cheaper but stiffer and more prone to cracking. Some manufacturers use topical polysiloxane or fluoropolymer treatments to enhance hydrophobicity alongside the gloss effect. The term wetlook itself emerged in the 1960s fashion industry and remains primarily a consumer-facing descriptor rather than a technical specification.
In industrial applications beyond fashion, wetlook finishes appear on automotive interior trim, boat upholstery, and protective gear where high gloss is required for visual effect or light reflectivity. The finish is also used on flexible polymer films and coated papers for packaging. However, the inherent brittleness and poor durability of wetlook coatings limit their use in high-wear or outdoor applications; traditional hard-finish topcoats and UV-resistant polyester laminates are preferred where longevity and chemical resistance are priorities.
