A teaser is a preliminary forming die or punch used in metal stamping and cold heading operations. It performs the first stage of a multi-step shape, removing most of the material waste and leaving a reduced blank or semi-formed profile for the final die to work with. The teaser shrinks die wear by dividing the total deformation across multiple stages rather than trying to achieve the final shape in one catastrophic compression.

In cold heading of fasteners, a teaser punch prepares the blank by drawing down the stock diameter or tapering a shoulder before the header die produces the final bolt head or nut form. Similarly, in progressive stamping, a teaser station on the die strip might partially deep-draw a cup or trim excess material before succeeding stations finish the part. The term appears most often in heavy stamping of automotive components, appliance parts, and fasteners where forming forces are large enough that staging the work becomes economical.

A single die doing all the forming work in one stroke generates extreme stress at the tool edges, shortening tool life and sometimes causing fracture. The teaser distributes this load and allows the metal to work-harden progressively, reducing the force needed at each stage. For deep-drawn or heavily compressed parts, a teaser can cut overall cycle time by enabling faster subsequent die operations since the metal has already undergone partial deformation and annealing (if intercycle heat treatment is used) can be avoided.

Teaser design demands careful calculation of reduction ratios and geometry to avoid leaving excessive material or creating stress concentrations that the finish die must then correct. Poorly designed teasers produce blanks with uneven thickness, work-hardened zones in the wrong places, or ears and wrinkles that waste more time than they save. The skill lies in removing enough material fast enough to justify the extra station without leaving the finish die with impossible work.
