A safety chain is a length of heavy chain attached between a railway truck (bogie) and the car body above it, left deliberately slack under normal running conditions. Its sole purpose is to limit vertical separation if the coupling or suspension fails catastrophically, preventing the truck from dropping away entirely and causing a derailment or collision.
The chain typically measures 300 to 500 mm in working length and is made from mild steel links of 10 to 16 mm diameter, depending on the vehicle's load rating. Both ends are permanently fixed: one bolted to a lug on the truck frame, the other to a corresponding attachment point on the underside of the car body, usually near a bogie mounting boss. The slack is critical; if the chain were taut, it would transmit shock loads during normal suspension movement and create noise and wear.
A slue occurs when a truck shifts laterally relative to the car body, typically caused by track defects, excessive speed on curves, or worn suspension bushes. The safety chain engages only when this lateral or vertical movement exceeds the design tolerance, at which point the chain snaps tight and arrests further motion before the coupling can fail completely. Without it, a derailed truck can separate horizontally from the body, leading to jackknifing or catastrophic structural failure.
Inspection and replacement
Safety chains are inspected during routine bogie servicing; they must show no permanent deformation, rust corrosion deeper than surface patina, or cracks at the weld or link junctions. A chain that has engaged under load will show stretch marks or kinks and must be replaced immediately. Replacement is straightforward and requires no specialist tools, making it a common depot task.
The safety chain is distinct from the drawbar coupling and from the friction dampers fitted to modern bogies. It is now standard on freight wagons and many older passenger vehicles, though modern suspension designs with integral snubbers have reduced reliance on it. However, regulatory requirements in most jurisdictions still mandate its presence as a redundant safeguard.
