A sand jack is a mechanical device used to lower heavy loads slowly and steadily by releasing sand from an internal chamber. The load rests on a platform connected to a sand-filled container; as sand trickles out through an adjustable orifice, the weight of the load gradually descends at a controlled rate. This allows workers to set an item down precisely without dropping it or requiring continuous manual lowering effort.

The sand jack relies on a simple principle: friction between the sand particles and the container walls, combined with the restricted flow rate through the outlet valve, creates resistance to the falling load. The operator controls descent speed by adjusting a tapered plug or gate valve that narrows or widens the sand exit hole. Flow rate depends on sand granule size, moisture content, and valve opening, making the device predictable across repeated cycles once settings are locked.

Common uses and limitations

Sand jacks excel in situations where a load must be positioned carefully into a narrow or confined space, or where gradual lowering prevents damage to the item or surrounding structure. They are particularly valuable in rigging heavy machinery, bridge bearings, and structural elements where hydraulic or mechanical jacks would be impractical. Typical capacities range from 5 to 50 tonnes, though larger units exist. The device is non-powered and works reliably even in dusty or vibration-prone environments.

Sand jacks do have drawbacks. The descent cannot be stopped and reversed mid-stroke; if the load reaches ground before the sand empties, the jack becomes inert dead weight. Sand also degrades over time, compacting and absorbing moisture, which reduces flow consistency. Refilling and maintenance add labour cost. For this reason, sand jacks are often paired with other devices, such as small hydraulic jacks to stop descent if needed, or counterweights to assist on the way down.

The sand jack is an old technology, predating electric and pneumatic alternatives by decades. Its name is literal: sand is the working medium. In modern practice it remains useful where simplicity, reliability, and cost matter more than speed or precision, and it continues to appear in heavy rigging and formwork operations worldwide.
