sett: warp density, measured in ends per inch

Sett is the count of warp threads packed into one inch of woven fabric width. It is a direct measure of warp density and a fundamental specification that determines cloth structure, hand, and performance. A fabric with 60 ends per inch has a much tighter, denser weave than one with 30 ends per inch. Sett is always stated as a whole number and is one of the first parameters a weaver or mill engineer must define before production begins.

The sett interacts directly with yarn count to produce the finished fabric weight and appearance. Fine-count yarns woven at high sett (80 to 120 ends per inch) create dense, smooth fabrics suitable for dress goods or shirting. Coarser yarns at looser sett (15 to 40 ends per inch) produce open, airy weaves for canvas, drapery, or technical textiles. The pick density (weft ends per inch) is set independently, so a single warp sett can support multiple weft densities depending on the intended end use.

Sett in the loom and mill

Sett is built into the fabric at the warping and weaving stage. The warp is wound onto the loom beam at a fixed pitch that corresponds to the sett; this spacing cannot be adjusted once weaving starts. If the sett is too loose, the fabric will be flimsy and the warp prone to damage. If too tight for the yarn strength and loom speed, warp breakage becomes excessive. Mills choose sett based on yarn denier, fiber type, loom type, and customer specification. Historical practice varies by region and fiber: woolen mills often use lower sett (25 to 50), while cotton mills may run 60 to 100 or higher.

The term comes from the verb to set, meaning to fix or position in place. It reflects the fact that once the warp is threaded into the reed and onto the beam at a given sett, that spacing is locked for the production run. Changing sett requires re-beaming the warp or threading a different reed, a time-consuming operation that mills avoid during a run.

Sett is also called warp count in some contexts, though that term can be ambiguous. The pick count (weft density) is measured the same way, in picks per inch. Together, sett and pick count define the cloth construction and are recorded on specification sheets, sample cards, and mill documentation. A error in sett, whether misspecified or misread, will produce off-specification cloth that may fail performance testing or customer acceptance.
