Marine glue is a hard, brittle cement made from shellac and pitch, used to seal the seams of wooden ship decks and hulls after caulking. Despite its name, it contains no adhesive binder in the modern sense: it works by filling gaps and hardening into a rigid mass that resists water penetration. The mixture is heated to a workable consistency, forced into the opened seams with a putty knife or caulking iron, and allowed to cool and harden into a watertight plug.
The standard formulation historically combined rosin, pitch, and shellac in roughly equal proportions by weight, sometimes with added tallow or linseed oil to reduce brittleness. The exact recipe varied by shipyard and region. The shellac component gave adhesion and hardness, while the pitch provided water resistance and bulk. A correctly mixed batch should be firm enough to hold shape when cool but soft enough to work into seams when heated to around 150 to 170 degrees Celsius.
Application and Failure Modes
Marine glue was pressed into seams that had already been caulked with oakum (tarred rope fibers) and sealed with pitch or tar. The glue's primary role was to lock the caulking in place and provide a final water barrier. It was applied to deck seams more often than hull seams, since deck leaks were the most troublesome in service. Over time, the glue would become brittle in cold climates or soften excessively in tropical heat. Repeated flexing of the hull, especially in wooden ships driven hard in rough seas, would cause the glue to crack and fall out, requiring recaulking and re-gluing at considerable expense.
The introduction of steam-powered metal ships in the mid-nineteenth century made marine glue largely obsolete for new construction, though wooden vessels continued to use it well into the twentieth century. Modern equivalents for wooden boat repair use synthetic polymers and epoxies, which offer better flexibility and durability. However, restoration work on historic vessels still calls for historically accurate marine glue when original seams must be authentically renewed.
The term persists in shipwright and maritime heritage vocabularies despite being a misnomer. Glue, in strict materials science, is an adhesive that bonds two surfaces together; marine glue is really a rigid filler and sealant. Older maritime texts sometimes call it 'marine cement' or 'stopping', terms that better describe its actual function. Understanding what marine glue actually is, a fragile, thermoplastic plug rather than a true adhesive, is essential for anyone working with wooden ship preservation or studying period construction methods.
