A shear-cake is a slab of refractory material, typically firebrick or castable refractory, mounted on counterweights and hinges to serve as a removable door or gate for small furnaces, kilns, or roasting ovens. The counterweight system allows an operator to swing it open and closed with minimal manual force, which is essential when working near high-temperature openings where thermal stress and heavy materials are constant hazards.

The term reflects its function: it acts as a shear or pivot gate, with the slab itself composed of refractory cake material. In roasting operations and ore preparation, shear-cakes regulate charge loading, allow sample extraction, and provide access for maintenance without requiring the furnace to cool entirely. The refractory composition is critical, as the door faces direct radiant heat and thermal cycling, typically 600 to 1200 degrees Celsius depending on the furnace type.

Design varies by application. A small laboratory muffle furnace might use a simple hinged shear-cake of 100 by 150 mm, while a roasting oven serving ore calcining could have a slab of 300 by 500 mm or larger, suspended by wrought iron hinges and balanced by cast iron counterweights ranging from 15 to 50 kilograms. Proper balance is critical; an unbalanced door drifts open or slams shut, both of which damage the refractory and create safety hazards.

Wear and failure modes

Refractory shear-cakes deteriorate through thermal spalling, mechanical abrasion from repeated opening, and chemical attack from furnace atmospheres or charge dust. The hinge points and the refractory itself are vulnerable; spalling at the edges reduces sealing integrity, allowing heat loss and allowing charge material to contact the hinge assembly. Replacement intervals depend on duty but typically range from six months to two years in continuous operation. The counterweight system itself requires inspection for corrosion and hinge wear, particularly in moist or corrosive environments.

Shear-cakes occupy a middle ground in furnace design between simple hinged metal doors, which overheat and fail rapidly, and fixed refractory linings, which require furnace shutdown for access. They remain standard in small-scale roasting, assay ovens, and ore preparation work where access flexibility and thermal integrity must coexist within practical and economic limits.
