A spurn is a column of coal deliberately left in place during underground mining to support the weight of overhanging rock and coal seams. It serves the same structural function as a pillar in a building, bearing vertical load to prevent roof collapse. In coal mines, spurns are essential safety features; miners cut coal around them in a pattern designed to extract as much saleable coal as possible while leaving enough material to carry the load above.

Spurns vary in size and spacing depending on seam depth, overburden weight, and coal strength. A thin, weak seam might require closely spaced spurns to stay safe; a thick, strong seam can tolerate wider spacing. The geometry is set out in advance during mine planning. Poor spurn design or premature removal causes sudden roof falls, which kill or trap workers and can trigger cascading collapses across entire sections of a mine.

The coal in a spurn is under considerable compressive stress. Depending on depth and seam conditions, stress can exceed the coal's bearing capacity, leading to rib spalling or gradual creep. Weak coal spurns may yield and compress over time, allowing slow subsidence of the roof; stronger spurns can fail suddenly if overloaded by mining geometry errors or by concentrated stress from nearby extraction. Skilled mine engineers calculate spurn dimension to balance safety against coal loss, since every ton of coal left standing is unrecoverable ore.

The term spurn appears to derive from its function of spurring or propping up the overburden. It is used interchangeably with pillar in much modern mining literature, though regional and historical practice varies. In some British coal fields, the word spurn remains standard; in North America, pillar is more common. Both refer to the same structural necessity: unmined or partially mined coal sections acting as load-bearing members in an otherwise hollowed-out mine.
