shed roof: the simplest single-slope design
A shed roof is a single plane of roofing material pitched at an angle between roughly 15 and 45 degrees, with no ridge, hip, valley, or other interruption across its surface. It slopes from a higher wall or beam on one side down to a lower wall on the opposite side. The term comes directly from farm buildings: the lean-to sheds built against larger structures, where a single sloped surface was both the cheapest option and adequate for light-use spaces.
The defining feature is structural simplicity. Unlike a gable roof (which has two slopes meeting at a ridge) or a hip roof (which has slopes on all four sides), a shed roof requires only one continuous load path from the high side to the low side. This means fewer structural members, less complex framing, and lower material costs. A typical residential shed roof might slope at 4:12 pitch (4 inches of vertical rise per 12 inches of horizontal run), though steeper pitches are used in high-rainfall or snow regions and shallower pitches in arid climates.
In residential construction, shed roofs appear most often on extensions, additions, and auxiliary structures. Modern architecture has increasingly adopted shed roofs for whole houses, especially in contemporary and minimalist designs. The exposed low side creates a visual sweep rather than the broken sightline of a gabled end. On commercial and industrial buildings, shed roofs are common on single-story warehouses and factories, where the high side sits along a wall capable of supporting the structural load.
Drainage and exposure concerns
Water flows in one direction only, which simplifies drainage design but concentrates runoff at the downslope edge. If the pitch is too shallow, standing water and ice dams become risks. The high wall receives full exposure to wind pressure and weather, which can drive rain under eaves if they are not properly detailed. The lower wall receives minimal weather exposure, but the transition point between roof and wall must be flashed carefully to prevent water from running down the high wall and into the structure.
Shed roofs are sometimes confused with mono-pitch roofs, though the terms are synonymous in practice. The single-slope design trades architectural symmetry and interior headroom uniformity for economy and structural directness. On a given building footprint, a shed roof encloses less volume than a gable, which can be a liability for attic space but an asset for heating and cooling load in passive solar designs. The structural support must account for the full span from high to low wall without an intermediate ridge to share the load.
