sheep-split: thin leather layer from a split hide
A sheep-split is a thin section of leather produced by mechanically dividing a sheepskin parallel to its surface. The process uses a splitting machine with a sharp blade that cuts horizontally through the hide, separating the upper grain layer from the lower flesh side. Each pass yields a usable leather strip, typically 0.5 to 1.5 mm thick depending on the original hide thickness and the depth of the cut.
The grain side (top split) retains the natural wool follicle marks and remains the premium product, suitable for garments or finished goods. The flesh splits, lacking this surface character, are weaker and more often used for buffing, suede production, or lower-grade applications. A single sheepskin might yield two to four splits depending on hide quality and machinery settings.
Splitting machinery and variations
Traditional splitting used hand knives or manual benches where workers made successive shallow cuts, but by the mid-20th century rotary and reciprocating split machines became standard in tanneries. Modern equipment allows adjustable blade depth and feed speed, enabling tanners to optimize yield from thinner skins. The term "sheep-split" itself dates to an era when sheepskin splitting was common enough to warrant its own vocabulary, now less frequently used as the practice has become more industrialized and the product described by more general terms like "split leather" or by specific thickness grades.
Sheep-splits differ markedly from splits of larger hides: sheepskin is thinner and more uniform than cattle hide, splitting more cleanly with less waste. The delicate nature of sheep leather also means excessive splitting depth risks compromising structural integrity. Quality control relies on visual inspection for tears, uneven thickness, and defects introduced during the cut.
In modern tanneries, sheep-splits compete with synthetic alternatives and bonded leather composites, reducing their market prominence. However, they remain valued in specialty leatherwork, bookbinding, and certain textile applications where the natural fiber structure and hand-feel of genuine leather, even in thin form, command a premium over substitutes.
