A cross-spall is a horizontal wooden brace fitted temporarily across a ship's frame during construction, before the deck beams are installed. Its purpose is to hold the frame rigid and in correct position on the building berth while the skeleton of the hull is being assembled. Without these braces, the frame would shift, twist, or collapse under its own weight and the stresses of construction work.
Cross-spalls are typically made from squared timber, often pine or fir, and are positioned at intervals along the length of the ship, spanning from one side of the frame to the other. They are bolted or lashed in place and removed once the permanent deck beams and other structural members are installed. The number and spacing of cross-spalls depend on the size and type of vessel being built, with larger ships requiring more bracing points.
The term 'spall' in shipbuilding refers to a chip or piece, but in this context it has come to mean a temporary prop or brace. The device is also known as a cross-pawl, though that term is less common in modern usage. Both names reflect the same functional role: a cross-member that prevents lateral movement of the frame during the vulnerable early stages of hull assembly.
Improper placement or inadequate cross-spalling can result in frames that are out of alignment, leading to difficult fairing work later or, in severe cases, structural weakness in the finished hull. Builders must calculate the loads carefully and space braces to prevent sagging or hogging of the frame. Once the deck beams are secured in place, the cross-spalls are knocked out and removed from the berth.
Modern shipyards still use temporary bracing systems, though the methods vary depending on whether the vessel is built in traditional ways or using modular prefabrication. In traditional frame-first construction, cross-spalls remain essential to maintaining frame shape and position throughout the early phases of the build.
