Shoad is weathered, detached ore or vein material lying loose in soil or scattered across a hillside, displaced from the bedrock source by erosion, frost action, or water movement. Miners call these fragments surface clues, and they are worth attention: where shoad appears, a lode body often sits uphill or nearby, still locked in rock. The term belongs primarily to hard rock mining in tin, copper, and other metalliferous districts, though it applies wherever ore outcrops break down at the surface.
A miner walking a valley or stream bed in a tin-mining region like Cornwall will pick up shoad fragments, examine their weight and color, and use them as vectors. Cassiterite (tin oxide) shoad is dense and dark; copper sulfide shoad is often stained green or blue by weathering. The size varies from dust-fine particles to chunks several centimeters across. Because shoad has already separated from barren rock, it is richer and more recognizable than the surrounding soil, making it a practical prospecting tool before drilling or sinking a shaft.
Reading and movement
Shoad is most abundant downslope or downstream from its source, since gravity and water carry it away from the parent vein. A prospector therefore works backward, tracing shoad uphill to narrow the search area. In porous soils or where streams have reworked material, shoad may travel tens of meters, creating a halo of indicators rather than a direct line. Conversely, in stable terrain with little erosion, shoad may be sparse or absent even above a rich deposit, particularly if the vein is narrow or poorly weathered.
The word itself, common in southwest England mining districts, likely derives from Old English or Cornish speech; its precise origin is obscure, but it has been documented in mining records since at least the 18th century. In other regions and trades, scattered ore fragments might be called gossan (the weathered cap of an ore body) or simply float, though shoad specifically implies the loose, transported pieces rather than the in-situ oxidized zone.
Modern mining uses geochemical surveys and airborne methods alongside traditional shoad hunting, yet the term endures because the observation remains valid: surface material tells a story about what lies beneath. A junior geologist joining a tin exploration team in Devon or a small-scale hardrock operation elsewhere will still hear shoad mentioned as evidence and as a starting point for more rigorous investigation.
