silvopasture: trees and livestock sharing the same ground
Silvopasture is a land management system in which trees grow at densities that still permit grazing animals to feed on understorey vegetation. The trees provide shade, shelter, and browse (edible leafy material), while the animals manage grass and herbaceous growth that would otherwise accumulate beneath the canopy. Unlike conventional forestry, which excludes livestock, or conventional pasture, which removes trees, silvopasture deliberately integrates both. The stocking rate and tree density must be balanced so neither use completely dominates or suppresses the other.
The densest silvopasture systems contain 50 to 150 trees per hectare, enough to provide meaningful shade and timber potential but sparse enough for reasonable forage production. Temperate silvopasture commonly uses hardwoods such as oak, ash, or walnut; tropical systems often feature nitrogen-fixing species like Acacia or Gliricidia that improve soil and provide supplementary feed. Grazing animals range from cattle and sheep to goats, pigs, and poultry, each requiring different tree spacing and canopy architecture. Shade becomes critical in hot climates, where it reduces heat stress and improves both meat and milk quality.
The arrangement prevents several problems endemic to monoculture systems. In open pasture, bare soil erodes, and forage quality declines in summer. Dense forest pasture becomes rank and unpalatable. A silvopasture system maintains forage quality through selective grazing while tree leaf-fall enriches soil organic matter and reduces fertilizer dependence. Timber growth is slower than in closed-canopy forestry but faster than in isolated windrows, and the standing wood provides income diversification. Animal treading can compact soil in wet conditions, however, and bark stripping or browsing damage from livestock can reduce timber value if tree protection is inadequate.
The term combines Latin silva (forest) with pasture. Silvopasture is distinct from alley cropping, which spaces trees to allow machinery access for annual crops, and from woodland pasture, a looser integration typical of extensive rangeland systems. In the timber trade, silvopasture occupies a middle ground: it sacrifices some yield per hectare for ecological stability and landscape-level productivity. Adoption requires upfront planning of tree species, spacing, fencing, and rotation cycles, making it less common than conventional use but increasingly valued for carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and resilience to climate stress.
