A soft key is a physical button positioned adjacent to a display screen, typically along its bezel, whose function is defined by text or symbols shown on the adjacent part of the display itself. Unlike hard keys with fixed labels and purposes, soft keys are reassigned dynamically as the screen content changes. When you navigate to a different menu or mode, the labels printed on the screen next to those buttons change, and so does what each button does. This design reduces the number of physical controls needed while keeping interfaces flexible.
Soft keys appear on industrial equipment ranging from test instruments and oscilloscopes to machine tool control panels and programmable logic controller (PLC) programming devices. A typical arrangement has four to eight soft keys along one or two edges of the display. The screen itself reserves a strip of pixels, usually 20 to 40 pixels high, to display the current function labels. When you press a soft key, the equipment executes whatever function that label indicates: changing a parameter, toggling a mode, selecting a submenu, or confirming an entry.
Variants and interaction patterns
Some soft key systems use a dedicated line of text labels directly adjacent to the buttons, printed or rendered in a fixed screen region. Others use more elaborate graphical buttons drawn on the display itself, where the soft key presses activate whatever icon or control element is highlighted near that button position. Devices with touch screens sometimes replace physical soft keys with onscreen buttons entirely, though industrial environments often retain physical buttons for reliability and gloved operation. High-reliability equipment sometimes pairs soft keys with a separate menu encoder or rotary selector, allowing operators to navigate menus while soft keys remain dedicated to confirming or executing actions.
The main limitation of soft keys is discoverability: operators cannot see all available functions at once without scrolling through menus, and the function of each button is only visible if they look at the screen. Careless design leads to confusion or slower operation. Industrial designs mitigate this by keeping menu depth shallow, using consistent button positions across modes, and providing printed reference cards showing the menu structure. Multifunction devices sometimes use a hybrid approach, with some keys hardwired to critical functions and others soft.
Soft keys became widespread in the 1980s and 1990s as small LCD and CRT displays became affordable enough for fieldside equipment. They were pioneered on instruments like oscilloscopes and function generators, where screen real estate was limited and instrument modes were numerous. The term reflects the contrast with "hard keys," which have fixed mechanical purposes regardless of what the instrument is doing. Today soft keys remain standard on equipment where flexibility and compact control panels matter more than tactile feedback and immediate discoverability.
