A small appliance is a single-function or limited-function electrical device designed for domestic use, typically weighing under 20 pounds and operating from standard household voltage (120V in North America, 230V in Europe). These machines sit on countertops, tables, or shelves and plug into wall outlets. Unlike built-in appliances such as ovens or dishwashers that are permanently installed, small appliances are discrete units a user can move, store, or remove. Common examples include toasters, blenders, coffee makers, hair dryers, microwaves, and food processors.

The category bridges consumer and industrial design. Manufacturers must meet safety standards like UL 60730 or equivalent regional certifications, which specify insulation requirements, temperature limits, and ground-fault protection. A toaster heating element, for instance, reaches 1200 to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring nichrome wire rated for sustained high temperature. The motor in a food processor or blender typically runs at 1500 to 3600 rpm on a universal AC/DC motor or induction motor, depending on power level and application.

Design trade-offs define the segment. Engineers balance cost against durability; most small appliances are not repairable and are replaced rather than serviced. Thermal cutouts and bimetal thermostats protect against overheating. Cord strain relief, polarized plugs, and double insulation reduce shock risk. The housing is usually molded plastic or sheet metal painted or powder-coated, chosen for cost and ease of manufacturing rather than longevity.

Variants and failure modes

Small appliances fall into broad types: heating (toasters, kettles, griddles), mixing and grinding (blenders, food processors), air circulation (hair dryers, fans), and microwave ovens. Heating devices fail when heating elements open (break the circuit) or develop leaks if they contain liquid. Motors fail from bearing wear, capacitor failure in AC units, or rotor imbalance. Cord and plug damage account for many safety incidents. Water ingress in moisture-prone appliances like coffee makers causes short circuits and corrosion of traces on printed circuit boards.

The term "small" distinguishes these from major appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers) that require professional installation, and from large cooking equipment in commercial kitchens. Retail trade separates them by shelf space and inventory: small appliances occupy counter-height displays, rotate inventory rapidly, and command lower unit margins than major appliances. Service and repair channels differ too; small appliances are rarely serviced in-home and are typically replaced at end of life, driving high unit volumes in waste streams.
